I've removed a fair bit of old glass from old sash, either to put back or to save for other projects. It usually contains putty, paint, grime, etc, which I've scraped off, softened with steam, used Windex on-- whatever.

I'm wondering about creating a tray filled with some type of solution and just dropping them in there as I remove them. They could usually sit in there for a week or even longer. Maybe just soapy water would work, or maybe a mild solvent such as diluted vinegar? Do any of you do this? What works?

5% lye in water solution. Not longer then over night. Then neutralize with vinegar and wash with water. This is for window glass not stained glass
