While I am completely against Vinyl siding, I understand the need to save trees.

I was wondering if with today's technology if a man-made substitute is available for wood shakes or clapboard that looks like wood up close and has a decent lifespan. Additionally not PVC or a harmful product.

thanks

Fiber cement board might be what you are looking for but wood siding is probably subject to the least amount of toxic chemicals and industrial processes. If your concern in the environment you might not want to write off wood siding.

Sure, some trees should be saved, but some trees can be used too.

Wood siding is more sustainable that most modern siding products.

A tree is cut down to make the wood siding. More trees are growing all the time. I think that's just about the definition of "sustainable."

If you, yourself, want to do something about this, you could plant a couple of trees in your own yard that could be cut down in the future to make siding for your house, when the siding on there now is wearing out, say about 80 or 100 years from now.

Just use some good Western Red Cedar and call it a day. It really is an environmentally friendly choice.

Then you can watch some cedar being harvested on an episode of Heli Logger... god that show is awesome.
