In the first post in this forum, about two-thirds of the way in, you refer to thinning varnish to use as a primer coat before the final coat. Would you use mineral spirits or turpentine, or would either be an option? What would the proportions be? Would I sand the primer coat before applying the final? This would be for an interior surface. I'm using a solvent-based spar varnish from Ace Hardware because right now it's the best available in my locale. I'd also appreciate some insight on what information to look for on a spec sheet for varnish. I want to do some research on this and some historical perspective would probably help, too.
