I have a 100 year old house with unpainted windows on the interior and an unpainted exterior door.

First, the windows are showing some signs of sun damage and I wanted to know how I can clean them up and then apply some protection (ie polyurethane or the like) to them. I was told by one person to use linseed oil but I have read other places not to.

Second, My front door is stained and is very faded due to the sun. I would like recommendations on how to refinish the door. I assume I will have to restain and then apply a protective coat.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Jason

Jason..
Indeed there are different schools of thought as far as the use of linseed oil. I happen to prefer it to replenish the wood with oil then apply primer and finish paint--if there is a paint finish required.
I am currently working on sash that appear to be stained or oiled on both the interior and exterior. After scraping the dry clear coats and sanding with 120 grit, I applied a coat of 2/3 boiled linseed oil and 1/3 turpentine mixture. It brought back the color and lustre on the interior--I will apply a second coat and leave it. On the exterior I am considering a Tung oil finish or stain with Spar Varnish...I have heard/read pro and con about the Spar Varnish finish. These windows are protected by a wrap around porch and will not be subjected to full UV rays....

Good luck......Jade
