My windows have Athey interlock weatherstripping which is a unique system where there is a cloth lined (felt like material) metal channel put into the dado in the stiles and the T shaped rail attached to the frame also has some felt inside of the T projection.

I've just removed my first sash to actually get a good look at the weatherstripping and I'm not sure what to do about it long term. Wood and metal can last over a hundred years. Cloth cannot.

If it were regular weatherstripping I would just leave it. The problem is that I'm not sure if having this felt-like cloth in the channel is going to be an issue with the long term usability of the windows. Right now most windows are stuck with paint. 1.5 windows are operable with some friction noticeable, but it is not clear if that is from built up paint, the fact that the weights are not all in place or drag from the weatherstripping.

My gut tells me to just let it roll, live out its life and when it causes problems then take out the cloth lined channels.

Thoughts?

(Sorry if my descriptions are a bit mucky, this is going to be my first window restoration and I'm still getting used to the lingo.)

I'd say roll with it as long as it is working. Handle it delicately to keep it working.
