I have a 4500 SF 1903 Queen Anne Victorian that has been painted multiple times and never scraped or prepped. It has every kind of paint failure but a lot of paint that is STUCK. I prefer to remove it to bare wood and every method looks ghastly as per the amount of work and messiness. What method do you guys think is best? I also have a Victorian metal shingle roof that is original to the house. In this case I definitely have to remove all the paint. There is a lot of severely peeling paint but again, what isn't peeling is stuck tight. There is about 40% that is stuck. The roof is high with a lot of severe pitch. What do you all think would be best for that? Not surprisingly I am having trouble getting anyone to go on to do the roof. Also, does anyone know where I could buy chemical paint remover by the 50 gallon barrel? Thanks _________________ Michele |

Hi Michelle, Welcome to the forum.
Just to give you some overall perspective:
--At lease 30% of the work is providing safe access. We usually do this with scaffolding.
--65% of the work is surface preparation, including paint removal.
--5% is paint application, like frosting on the cake.
--At least 20% of the work in paint removal is keeping everything cleaned up as you work along, so nothing gets in a mess.
Here are the paint discussions, for your late night reading pleasure.

This brief comparison of the removal methods would be a good place to start:
