Isn't plastic slate sort of an oxymoron on the level of jumbo shrimp?

For the life of me, I'll never figure out why people want to use fake slate. You can buy the REAL THING. It's been tested and depending on the type of slate you purchase it can last a very long time.

I've had many people tell me I could buy a product that looked just like slate, whenever I brought up the topic of slate, even by people that fix old houses for a living.

I just purchased very good Buckingham slate for under $3,000 to do my whole house. It was salvage, but still plenty hard and will likely last 75-100 years if not longer.

There really needs to be a lot more education among people with slate roofs. Many slate roofs are nearing there end over here in nj if they have soft penn grey on them, but one's that have better slate are being torn off when they just need to be fixed. Problem is, people don't fix them correctly.

Interesting your neighbors went for synthetic slates. I realize it can be hard to find someone to do slate, but with a little time on the internet, it's certainly not impossible. Obviously some idiot roofer talked them into it. All of the roofers that came to my house tried to talk me out of slate, even one's that specialize (supposedly) in it. One guy said to me "what are you gonna do, set up a lawn chair and stare at your roof all day?"

That's why I'll be doin' it myself. Save a hell of a lot of money too.


Everyone should have a slate roof I think. It lasts, and is very green!
If you own a slate roof, buy the slate roof bible. It's a great book.
