one more project knocked down: our bedroom had a massive leak above the mantlepiece; a quick look at the chimney shows why...

plenty of chimneysweep and repair companies gave me a quote of around $400 to redo the job, but all were going to use thin steel or aluminum flashing and minimal mortar to do it.
i found a gentleman who gave me detailed descriptions and pictures of what he would do, for about twice what the others quoted. here is the result:

can't wait for it to rain to test it!

this gentlerman (david rich) appears to be the john leeke of gutters and metalwork! check out his web site; HOURS of reading on how to do (or not to do) guttering and roof-related jobs.
next he is going to make some new downspouts for me, show me what tools to use, and turn me loose to install them - he would just as soon me do the job and learn a skill as take my money to do it for me.
his web site: http://dmr-gutters.com/pro.htm

Amazing. You are so lucky to have found such quality craftsmen (and women!) to work on your home. I loved the website and bookmarked it.
